Loneliness is, unfortunately, a fact of life for many seniors. However, acknowledging and discussing it can help families assist their older loved ones in navigating this common issue. And a new study finds that senior living communities can play a significant role in reducing loneliness.

U.S. News & World Report Senior Living Survey canvassed seniors who had recently moved into such facilities, offering a contrast between their lives before and after the transition. It found that the move had a huge impact—pre-senior living community, 69% of respondents reported feeling lonely more than half the time. After moving into the community, that dropped to 42%.

That’s a huge difference and makes senior living communities worth considering for anyone, whether you have an aging loved one or you are navigating the golden years yourself.

Causes of Loneliness

Why is loneliness so widespread among older adults? Unavoidable life changes play a large role. According to the U.S. News survey, the top causes of loneliness among this age group are:

·        Recent passing of a spouse, which removes a main source of social interaction

·        Lack of mobility or physical disability, which can make it difficult to leave the house or find inclusive activities

·        Memory loss, which can spark feelings of confusion or being left out

·        Intensifying hearing or vision issues, which may make participating in conversations difficult and increase a sense of isolation

·        Separation from family and friends, whether because of a move or inability to leave the house

·        Chronic health conditions, which may require treatment at the doctor’s office or hospital, cutting into downtime

These are all serious and often unavoidable issues. Being prepared to deal with them can make a big difference in quality of life, as loneliness can impact self-worth and self-confidence.

How Senior Living Communities Combat Loneliness

Obviously, it can be a challenge to make new friends at any age. Keeping up with longtime friends and family can also be difficult based on the factors listed above. But senior living communities can provide a balm to salve those problems.

The U.S. News survey found that 65% of respondents found it easier to meet other seniors after moving into a senior living community, and 85% reported making new friends. Almost two-thirds said their feelings of loneliness eased after entering a senior living community.

Being around people dealing with the same life transitions helps you feel less alone. If you still live in your family home, it may be difficult to find another person close by who has experienced the loss of a spouse, for instance. But at a senior living community, you can find someone who has endured the same loss with relative ease — alas, these things are simply part of life.

People in senior living communities also were at least twice as likely to find meaning in daily activities, take part in an activity they enjoy, engage in physical activity or share a meal with a friend.

Senior living communities offer a great way to feel included, meet new people and enjoy meaningful experiences. Are you planning ahead for that time in your life? Get in touch with Jay to discuss your options and how you can make a senior living community part of your planning.
